Be Ready. Be Covered. Be Sure.

Lifting claims are one of the most common worker compensation claims and potentially the most severe. One bad lifting claim that requires back surgery could easily cost $50,000 or more plus lost time wages.

Proper lifting techniques are not just about bending your knees, it’s an entire process that should be detailed in writing from start to finish.

  1. First, work to eliminate as much manual lifting as possible. Let machines do the lifting, not humans.
    • If you are a healthcare provider use mechanical lifts for patient transfers.
  2. When manual lifting is absolutely required have detailed written guidelines on when, where and how to lift.
  3. Provide frequent refresher training on the lifting procedures.

  4. Find a local physical therapist who can help you understand the proper body mechanics of lifting and help you put it in writing.
